Building Confidence and Independence Through Structured Support

Structured support for greater independence

Kensa Health provides Michael with 34 hours of structured support each week, delivered over five days, to promote his independence, health, and confidence. Michael has diabetes and ADHD, and support is tailored to help him develop sustainable routines and healthier lifestyle choices.

Healthier routines and everyday skills

Support staff work closely with Michael to improve his understanding of diet and nutrition, encouraging a reduction in sugary drinks and supporting healthier choices through consistent prompting and education. This includes assistance with meal planning, developing shopping lists, and teaching Michael how to cook a range of balanced meals, enabling him to prepare food independently and manage his diabetes more effectively.

Confidence in the community

Michael is supported to establish and maintain daily routines, including planning activities and travel across South Yorkshire by train. This structured approach has helped him become more confident, including learning to safely use pedestrian crossings, which he was previously unable to do. Staff have also encouraged and accompanied Michael to attend a gym several times a week, improving both his physical health and confidence in community settings. As a result, behaviours such as spitting have significantly reduced.

Maintaining a safe and comfortable home

In addition, Kensa Health supports Michael with personal hygiene, cleaning, and general self-care to ensure he maintains a safe and comfortable living environment. He is also provided with money management skills training, with encouragement and guidance to plan and manage his finances more effectively.

Outcome

Overall, this consistent, person-centred support enables Michael to live more independently, improve his health and wellbeing, and engage positively with his community.
