From College to Career: Why I chose a job in care with Kensa Health

By Marissa, Community Carer ā Torbay & South Hams Hub
When I started my Level 2 qualification in Health and Social Care, I had no idea how much working in the sector would bring the course to life. The course combined practical tasks with coursework and involved a lot of independent study and team projects.
Working part-time with Kensa Health while I studied made a real difference. Because my job and course covered similar topics, I could apply what I was learning straight away. I was already aware of key principles in care, which helped me both in college and in the community. It gave me the confidence to approach new situations and build professional relationships.

Learning on the Job
Since joining Kensa Health, Iāve learned so much. Iāve developed strong communication skills, especially when working with nurses, GPs and other healthcare professionals. Iāve supported people with a wide range of needs and learned how to adapt to different situations calmly and professionally.
Being out in the community has helped me grow in confidence. Iāve become more alert to changes in peopleās physical and mental health, and Iāve learned to recognise symptoms and understand medical conditions I hadnāt come across before. Iāve also learned the importance of teamwork and clear communication, both with colleagues and with the people we support.
If youāre new to care, you donāt need to have all the answers on day one. With the right support, you can learn everything you need as you go.
A Supportive Team and Clear Career Path
What Iāve really appreciated is how supportive Kensa Health is. The team is professional, approachable and committed to helping us achieve a good work-life balance. Youāre always encouraged to take part in training to build your knowledge and progress your career.

Thereās a real focus on doing the job well, but also on helping people develop. I know I can take on further learning and explore different paths in care as I gain more experience.
āMarissaās a great example of how care work can support professional development. Sheās grown in confidence and skill since day one, and weāre proud to support her as she continues building her career with us.ā ā Nicola, Care Manager (CQC RM), Kensa Health Torbay & South Hams
